Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation – it is a phrase you hear everywhere when looking into website design but what it is it?

search-engine-resultsSearch Engine Optimisation, or SEO, is the task undertaken to ensure that search engines such as Google, Yahoo and the new Bing can find your website for the right search phrases. After all, you could have the nicest looking website with the best information in the world – but what’s the point if no-one can find it?

Many companies out there will try and blind you with science and technology in a bid to get you to take their services. They will tell you that they can get you to the number one position in Google. What they don’t tell you is for what phrase. Most of the time they can guarantee that they can get you to the top for your company name. Great! If that’s how your customer’s find your products and services – only it isn’t.
If you sell different coloured widgets for example, you want to rank well for phrases such as ‘blue widgets’, ‘red widgets’ etc and not your company name.

google-search-resultsThere are many different aspects of SEO but a well designed website with good relevant content and some links from other relevant websites will put you in a very good position from which to start. There is not magic formula, but if your website is designed to make your customer’s lives easier, SEO should naturally follow without too much tweaking.

Our SEO Service

When we design a website from scratch we practice good website design and all aspects of onsite SEO are factored into the website design and structure. This practice means that our customers don’t have to employ a seperate company for SEO services.
Our own SEO services extends to helping those website owners who have been badly advised about SEO in the past, or have hired a designer or developer that hasn’t paid too much attention to the search engine optimisation of the website. We can offer a report that analyses your current website to see what can be improved.

I feel it is my duty to let you all know that it is unreasonable to make the request ‘I want to be number one in Google’. The only company who can guarantee you a number one listing on Google, is Google. Add into that the fact that results can be displayed differently according to the Google data centre you have been searching on, as well as the fact that search engines are increasingly delivering personalised results to it’s users, it is not something that can be guaranteed and you should be wary of anyone promising a number one listing.

SEO is also an ongoing process if you are serious about maintaing or increasing rankings. While you are doing nothing, your competitors are tweaking and enhancing their websites which could push them above your own site.

In summary, SEO is probably the most important part of a website, yet the one part that website owners tend to overlook, particularly as it is not easy to guage how long it will take for rankings to improve. Make sure you give your website a chance to shine, and contact us now to discuss how we can help you improve your search engine rankings.
